At the Tech 4 Society conference organised by the Ashoka & the Lemelson Foundations, were some amazing social innovators , who , by their dress, demeanour or dialogues would not turn a single head on the road. And yet with their passion, devotion, focus and hard work has reached the poorest of the poor . They do not believe in subsidies or give always but have made incredible difference in the lives of millions. Their case studies have entered the curriculum of Howard.
One among them, is Mr Amitabh Sadangi , CEO of International Development Enterprises, India. Hailing from a remote area in Orissa, he knew that there is a lot of ground water at barely 7 meter depth in Eastern India. But the only answer to pump out the water was by using a diesel pump which was beyond the reach of the poor farmers in the area. When he heard about the manually operated treadle pumps used in Bangladesh, he bought 2 pumps and started manufacturing them which could be operated even by old people and children and could water 1 acre land in one hour. He also devised a cheap micro irrigation system which could work in the southern and western regions of India, which had water at much deeper levels. Low cost water sprinkler and cheap water storage tanks were also designed by him . In all, his systems have reached over one million farmers increasing their net annual income by at least Rs 20000.
You and I can also become lighthouses like these true innovators instead of wasting time and energy .It is not the lack of opportunities but the positive attitude that make the changes happen.
