INDIAN HOCKEY VS. INDIAN CRICKET

Hi friends,

I just happened to read about the pathetic situation faced by an Indian game in The Week magazine last week. India is a place where we spend a lot of money for sports activities but still many of the games are not getting any importance. Cricket is the only game which gets importance more than it requires. Hereby this article, I just want to share my opinion about the difference in treatment given to Indian hockey players and cricket players. All sports have to get equal considerations. But as I said earlier, the situation in India is very different. While cricket players get chief position, the hockey players get only step-motherly treatment. The hockey players are making hue and cry over the treatment given to the national game. I am fully with the Indian hockey team. This is not because of I like that game or not but because of the truth behind it. Nobody gave a damn when hockey India won the Asia cup but on this when the twenty 20 cup win, people are going mad after it. Whose fault is this? Government or Public?

The current problem which created the hockey loving fans is that, hockey players didn’t attend the training for world cup, because they were not paid. This is really ridiculous to say that the players who are playing for the country do not get even the salary. Food at national campus has always been abysmal, despite the sports ministry spending Rs.480 per day on every player. Many players spend from their on pocket while cricketers get high luxury food, accommodation and traveling facilities.

When considering the promotional activities given to both the games, there are lots of differences. As I mentioned above, when hockey India won the Asia cup, they are not given any incentives monetary or non monetary. Suppose the Indian cricket team won a test at Australia or any other country, we will be wondering…wow what the prizes they are getting are. They will get big flats, luxury cars, and other very precious prizes. These are not the problem of government or sports federations; the media has also a vital role in promoting and de-prompting the games. Sachin, Dhoni, Harbajan we are proud to hear these names or even small children know who they are...but anyone asks what is hockey, how many players make a hockey team, who are leading hockey players etc...More than 90% will have no answer. Even the question is asked to me too has the same situation because I am among the 90%. This is because of the difference in the treatment provided to both games by media. Thus the question arising in front of us is “Is Indian hockey dying?”
