In condemning all deemed universities; the government is throwing out the baby with the bath water, overlooking their contributions in the areas of research, employment and curriculum innovations. The idea underlying deemed universities is to innovate and to redesign their curriculum to meet the rapidly changing needs of industry .Many such initiatives are being implemented by such universities in collaboration with industry and science research organizations integrated and collaborative degree programmes, internship-based course work at industry, practice schools, choice based credit system and open electives are some of the innovative curricular interventions. This is at par with global academic world which is moving towards a flexible curriculum .Sad to ask how many central or state universities have innovated their curriculum .Added to that UGC is mooting a uniform syllabus. People without proper qualifications in the management of the deemed universities, malpractices at the time of admission and also their unscrupulous growth cannot be overlooked. Tough guidelines for conferring deemed status such as a transparent and merit based admission system, proper qualified management to run the institutions etc should be created and meticulously enforced rather than doing away with deemed status .The therapy must be done not to be worse than the disease.
